SKT FMS 서비스 개시, 휴대폰 보조금 경쟁 부른다?

SK텔레콤이 오늘부터 FMS서비스를 시작합니다. FMS 서비스는 특정 지역에서는 인터넷전화 요금을 내고 지역 외에서는 기존 이동전화 요금을 내는 상품입니다. FMS에 대한 자세한 내용은 밑에 글을 클릭해보세요.

그런데 SK텔레콤의 이 서비스는 최근 자제 움직임을 보이고 있는 휴대폰 보조금 마케팅 경쟁을 다시 유발할 확률이 매우 높습니다. 왜냐고요? FMS는 단말기를 바꾸지 않아도 이용할 수 있기 때문입니다. 이랬다가 저랬다가 무슨 얘기냐고 반문하실 것입니다.

하지만 잘 생각해 보세요. SK텔레콤의 FMS 서비스는 KT의 FMC 서비스와 요금 구조가 같습니다. FMC 서비스는 FMS와는 달리 무선랜(WiFi)를 활용해 무선인터넷 가능지역에서는 인터넷전화로 이외 지역에서는 이동전화로 사용하는 서비스입니다.(관련기사:SKT ‘FMS’-KT ‘FMC’ 차이점은?) 이를 활용하기 위해서는 휴대폰 교체가 필수입니다. 더구나 무선랜을 지원하는 제품이라고 다 가능한 것도 아닙니다.
 
즉 SK텔레콤의 FMS의 이용자가 급증하면 KT는 FMC 서비스 활성화를 위해서 관련 단말기 보급을 우선 추진해야 합니다. 단말기 가격이 가장 먼저 걸림돌이겠지요. 그래서 KT가 보조금을 씁니다. 그러면 SK텔레콤도 가입자를 지키기 위해 보조금을 쓰겠죠.

LG텔레콤도 가만히 있을 수는 없을 것입니다. LG텔레콤은 더 복잡합니다. SK텔레콤의 FMS 같은 상품도 KT의 FMC 같은 상품도 없습니다. 두 회사의 관련 서비스 가입자가 늘면 LG텔레콤의 가입자가 줄어듭니다. 역시 질러야 합니다. LG텔레콤이 돈을 쓰니 SK텔레콤과 KT도 마케팅비를 늘릴 것입니다.

지금까지 이동통신시장에서는 가입자를 유지하거나 늘리기 위해서는 단말기 보조금만한 것이 없었습니다. 요금은 장기적인 효과를 기대해야 하는 것이기 때문에 당장 효과를 보기 힘듭니다.

물론 제 생각은 기우일수도 있습니다. 남은 11월과 12월을 지켜보면 알 수 있겠지요. 하여간 일단 휴대폰 구매 의사가 있는 분들은 한두달 정도 기다리시는 것이 좋을 듯 싶네요.
